Free Versus Paid Web Hosting

When you make the decision to start a website for your company, the first choice you will have to make is what web hosting service you would like to use. You have many choices since there are many, many web hosting services available. You will also have to decide whether to use a service that offers free hosting or one that charges a fee.

In order to make the best decision for the company you will need to consider both the advantages and disadvantages of each.

The best advantage to free web hosting is, well, it is free. Obviously, not having to pay to include your website online is quite a large plus. Since you do not have to pay for the website, you can save that budget for other expenditures.

Many free web-hosting services are offered through ISP’s, and quite a few of these even offer free email addresses along with the free web site.

Now that you know the advantages of a free web hosting service, it is time to consider the disadvantages. You will not be allowed to have your own domain address. Instead, you will be able to include a subdomain after the name of the web hosting service.

This can make it harder for customers to find you, does not look as professional, and means your website name will include a much longer address. In the long run, having your own domain, as offered through paid web hosting, will be the better choice.

Most free web hosting services only include the very basic software or no software at all. You will not have the ability to truly tailor your website to your business’ needs. You will be limited to only the set of designs offered by the web host.

This, again, will not present the most professional image. With paid web hosting, you will have the option of using the service’s many software options or even designing your site through outside software and uploading it, giving you much more control of the site design.

All in all, free web hosting is perfect for personal websites or hobby websites. Many people choose free hosting for fan sites, gaming sites, pop culture sites, and more. Paid web hosting is the best choice for a company since it offers more personalization, more options, and more professionalism. Paid web hosting usually also offers much better technical support than the free services, meaning people will be available to help when you need them.

Good Web Hosting Companies and How to Choose Them

With hundreds of web hosting providers to select from nowadays, it can be challenging to find out which ones are in fact worth using. The following will be a guide line to look for a good web hosting company:

Services – Often times we are sold on the perception of larger is going to be always better but I would like to look at web hosting providers with a quality more than quantity perspective. If lets say you are in need to have a simple 10 page website, do you honestly have to have a terabyte of bandwidth for it? Will you ever consume of all of those gigabytes of storage space?

Lots of web hosting providers would oversell their servers in this way, and rely on the tiny sites that will not reach their limits to keep things running. These providers are scattering themselves watery, and I would not suggest getting on board with one of them. Discover a host which is going to meet your sites current needs, and with the intention of further growth of your website in future.

Prices – I have seen small plans being rather expensive while some generous plans being fairly inexpensive. But the bottom line is that you are really getting what you are paying for! So if you feel that you are getting way more than what you are paying for, chances are they may not be one of those quality web hosting providers…

Another way in which Web Hosting providers will often reduce overheads to keep their prices cheaper is in their Customer service. Generally hosting providers online are simply reseller services, and can have terrible response times and customer support, as they are over extended or simply do not bother.

Customer service – As mentioned briefly above, this I feel is the most crucial aspect to keep in mind when looking for a good web hosting company. Do not over look this! or you would most likely be in trouble when you have a problem with your website. Wouldn’t it be a problem if their support stuff do not give you an answer/solutions for your problem right away?

Email support is the most common customer service that most of web hosting providers offer although many of them will also offer live chat, and some even phone support. Support is something I believe what determines the quality of a host. Data centers are all pretty alike, and often times a ration of resellers are at the same data center. Test out a company’s response time by asking some common questions before going ahead with one.

In one of my initial hosting experiences, I found a website with live chat, got online, asked my questions, and then signed up. Five days later I had a few support problems, and there was nobody there, same thing happened a few weeks later as well. They took a few weeks to cancel my account. So it is important to find a good web hosting company that is always reliable and fast response with their support.
